Discover the creative vision of Jiyeon Kim-Myung, featuring bold narratives on diversity and inclusivity
Jiyeon Kim-Myung (she/her) is a Korean filmmaker based in Los Angeles. She is passionate about telling emotionally resonant stories that queer societal norms and explore marginalized identities. Her characters reflect the world she comes from: Asian, female, and expat, living lives of joy, grief, chaos, and everything in between. Jiyeon works across various genres, including dark humor, surrealist fantasy, and coming-of-age drama.
According to Korean tradition, the object a baby chooses on their first birthday predicts their future: silk thread for long life, pen for scholarship, and stack of money for wealth. Jiyeon chose a paintbrush, and she’s now honoring that early creative calling. When not working on a project, she can either be found at the climbing gym or local cafe trying out new coffee beans for her next pour over.
Jiyeon holds an MFA in Film & TV Production with a focus in Directing from Loyola Marymount University.
Her thesis short, Over Easy, a fantasy comedy about womanhood and abortion, has screened at multiple Academy and Canadian Screen Award-qualifying festivals, including 2025 Outfest, 2024 LAAPFF, and 2024 Vancouver Queer FF.
Jiyeon recently completed a coming-of-age short, Socks, and is waiting to hear back from festivals. She is also developing her first dramedy feature, Mom Wanted.
Jiyeon also enjoys supporting other artists’ visions as much as her own. Her producing credits include Cocoon (Tribeca, Gotham/JetBlue Student Short winner) and Attached (Urbanworld), with more projects in pre-production.
